How the NCAA Volleyball Tournament Works

The 64-Team Field

The NCAA Division I women's volleyball tournament fields 64 teams every December. The field is split into two categories:

  • Automatic bids (31): Every Division I conference sends its tournament champion automatically. Win your conference tournament and you're in — regardless of your overall record.
  • At-large bids (33): The remaining spots go to the best teams that did not win their conference tournament, as selected by the NCAA committee. This is where RPI, strength of schedule, and head-to-head results matter most.

Track current automatic bids and at-large odds on the Selection Predictor and At-Large Bubble Watch.

At-Large Selection

The selection committee meets the Sunday after conference tournament weekend and announces the full bracket. They evaluate at-large candidates using a combination of factors:

  • RPI — the most commonly cited metric; see our RPI Rankings
  • Strength of schedule — weighted heavily; teams in strong conferences benefit
  • Results vs. top-50 and top-100 RPI opponents
  • Head-to-head results against other bubble teams
  • Winning percentage (conference and overall)

There is no strict formula. The committee reviews all factors holistically. Teams on the "bubble" — those right on the edge of the field — are discussed at length before the final selections.

Seeding & Hosting

After selecting the field, the committee seeds all 64 teams. The top 16 seeds are designated as national seeds and host first- and second-round matches at their campus facilities. Home-court advantage is a significant benefit — the crowd and familiar gym give top seeds a real edge.

Regionals (Sweet 16 and Elite Eight) are hosted at the higher seed's campus as well. The Final Four and championship match are held at a pre-selected neutral-site arena, announced months in advance.

Match Format

Tournament matches are best-of-five sets. The first team to win three sets advances. Sets 1–4 are played to 25 points (win by 2); if a fifth set is needed, it's played to 15 (win by 2). There are no tiebreakers beyond the fifth set — a team must win by two points regardless of how long it takes.
